Geo RR Martin's biography: author of 'Game of Thrones' (starring Sean Bean as Eddard Stark - in early 2011)
George R.R. Martin was born September 20, 1948 in Bayonne, New Jersey. His father was Raymond Collins Martin, a longshoreman, and his mother was Margaret Brady Martin. He has two sisters, Darleen Martin Lapinski and Janet Martin Patten. Martin attended Mary Jane Donohoe School and Marist High School. He began writing very young, selling monster stories to other neighborhood children for pennies, dramatic readings included. Later he became a comic book fan and collector in high school, and began to write fiction for comic fanzines (amateur fan magazines). Martin's first professional sale was made in 1970 at age 21: "The Hero," sold to Galaxy, published in February, 1971 issue. Other sales followed.

In 1970 Martin received a B.S. in Journalism from Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, graduating summa cum laude. He went on to complete a M.S. in Journalism in 1971, also from Northwestern.

He wrote part-time throughout the 1970s while working as a VISTA Volunteer, chess director, and teacher. In 1975 he married Gale Burnick. They divorced in 1979, with no children. Martin became a full-time writer in 1979. He was writer-in-residence at Clarke College from 1978-79.

Moving on to Hollywood, Martin signed on as a story editor for Twilight Zone at CBS Television in 1986.

In 1987 Martin became an Executive Story Consultant for Beauty and the Beast at CBS. In 1988 he became a Producer for Beauty and the Beast, then in 1989 moved up to Co-Supervising Producer. He was Executive Producer for Doorways, a pilot which he wrote for Columbia Pictures Television, which was filmed during 1992-93.

Martin's present home is Santa Fe, New Mexico. He is a member of Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America (he was South-Central Regional Director 1977-1979, and Vice President 1996-1998), and of Writers' Guild of America, West.

A Game of Thrones  --  Long ago, in a time forgotten, a preternatural event threw the seasons out of balance. In a land where summers can last decades and winters a lifetime, trouble is brewing. The cold is returning, and in the frozen wastes to the north of Winterfell, sinister and supernatural forces are massing beyond the kingdom’s protective Wall. At the center of the conflict lie the Starks of Winterfell, a family as harsh and unyielding as the land they were born to. Sweeping from a land of brutal cold to a distant summertime kingdom of epicurean plenty, here is a tale of lords and ladies, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and bastards, who come together in a time of grim omens.
Here an enigmatic band of warriors bear swords of no human metal; a tribe of fierce wildlings carry men off into madness; a cruel young dragon prince barters his sister to win back his throne; and a determined woman undertakes the most treacherous of journeys. Amid plots and counterplots, tragedy and betrayal, victory and terror, the fate of the Starks, their allies, and their enemies hangs perilously in the balance, as each endeavors to win that deadliest of conflicts: the game of thrones.
Martin's 'Song of Ice & Fire' readers have become so impatient for the upcoming series, they've started to create their own imaginative trailers. Following is by eliart...
Casting poll information:
The following news was found on the Game of Thrones' winter is coming website:
June 28, 2010
A casting call has gone out in the UK through several channels. They are on the look-out for Gendry - Aged 16-20. Working class. Big broad-shouldered blacksmith with thick black hair. Tall and muscular. Quite stubborn and not very sophisticated and quite wary and shy with strangers. He is unaware that he is the bastard son of the King.

The part will feature heavily in later seasons. Number of episodes (Season 1): 2 episodes
Season appearances: Seasons 1-4, maybe more

Didn't Richard already fill a very similar role when he was only a few yrs older than the above required age?  If the age was stretched another 5-7yrs, could he convincingly pass as a 27yr old today?  We already know his dramatic skills can interpret w/charming finesse a shy, unsophisticated laborer...(see poll)

Another great GOT post :) Yes, if RA was much younger, he would make a good Gendry, but a perfect Jon Snow. Sadly both characters are teenagers in the books, but even if aged to be in their 20's they have to be believable as brothers for the younger kids in the cast. I'm still keeping my fingers crossed for RA as Bronn. Here's a link to an artist's version of Bronn that reminds me of Guy : http://fc05.deviantart.net/fs25/f/2008/112/3/3/Bronn_by_Sir_Heartsalot.jpg
I'm very new to the books, but as i'm reading more, I think RA would have been great for Jamie (how would he look as a blond I wonder?). Ah, those blue eyes...

I think everyone way too hung-up on actual ages these days. Its supposed to be acting and a great actor(ess) can convince the viewer of almost anything (take Bernie Madoff for instance). I just finished viewing "Lennon Naked" in which 45 year-old Christopher Eccleston brilliantly portrayed very convincing a 23 year-old John Lennon.

RA is a very skilled actor and he could easily transform his looks to being more juvenile plus who would care after the first few transfixing minutes? However, the powers that be just want to appeal to a certain demographic and are afraid to be daring in anyway. They are of course missing a much larger market in my opinadly, even Armitage himself has spoken of his ion, who would have thought that the children's show Robin Hood would have attracted such rabid fans?

Musa & judith, both of you have made great points about the possibility of RA playing a role much younger than his actual age. If Ecclestone could pull it off, why not Richard - who no doubt is a finer actor (she said w/complete objectivity;)

I'm curious now about the Lennon piece and the Bronn artwork - off to find them. Don't miss the latest post & poll asking whether RA would make as sexy a TBH as TDH.

Shhhh....this great link for Lennon Naked is also where I downloaded SB as well. Will of course rent and/or buy them as soon as they come available in US.

Was just rewatching Eastern Promises for the untheenth time. Viggo's character Nikolai is the character on which I believe they based Lucas North. I heard Viggo has given up acting *sniff* and I would love to see RA do a sequel to it as it really deserves one.

judith, sincere thanks for the stagevu link...I'll check it out. Did take a quick peek at Eccleston as Lennon on a short youtube clip. He does have a remarkable resemblance to John, doesn't he? However, he looked older than 22yrs to me, but definitely not in his 40s.

Lennon was my least fav Beatle...he always seemed to have such a flippant attitude, and when Ohno came along the atmosphere took a quantum leap in strangeness.

Paul recently blew (through nasty & downright ignorant political remarks) his long-time impression on many Americans as the 'most mature' person of the group - now George & Ringo can assume that mantle. Who knew the two low-key Beatles would one day be thought of as the most stable of the quartet. Gives more credence to the truism - 'the noisiest wheels get the most attention';)
