How would this be for Sultan Suleyman in Starz upcoming Harem?*perfect*
You don't have to take cover from this twister. In fact, it's a welcome addition to Oakland Township — and all of Michigan.
A movie known only as "Untitled Tornado Project" has begun filming in the state. This week, a cast and crew of about 300 are on location at a school off the rural Lake George Road in Oakland Township.
The scene is surreal: a mangled school bus sits upside down on a hill in front of Oakview Middle School, part of the Lake Orion school district. All around, trees and debris are scattered, evidence of a natural disaster. Preparing for the next scene, crew members take sledgehammers to a car they need to appear destroyed and left in the tornado's path.
Here's the movie synopsis, according to publicist Tammy Sandler:
"In the span of a single day, the town of Silverton is ravaged by an unprecedented onslaught of tornadoes. The entire town is at the mercy of the erratic and deadly cyclones, even as storm trackers predict the worst is yet to come. Most people seek shelter, while others run towards the vortex, testing how far a storm chaser will go for that once-in-a-lifetime shot."
Oakview has been transformed into Silverton High School for the scene. Behind the school, a giant fan and a crane that pours rain onto the set help with the special effects. Sandler said about 200 students are cast as extras for this part of the movie.
The Michigan location is the result of a reinvestment in the film industry by Michigan leaders. After pulling back last year on tax incentives for movie companies, the state recently put together a new film tax incentive plan for the coming years.
Stars of the tornado project include:
- Richard Armitage (“Captain America: The First Avenger,” upcoming “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”)
- Sarah Wayne Callies (TV’s “The Walking Dead”)
- Matt Walsh (“Ted”)
- Nathan Kress (TV’s “iCarly”)
- Arlen Escarpeta (“Final Destination 5”)
- Jon Reep (“Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay”)
- Jeremy Sumpter (“Soul Surfer,” TV’s “Friday Night Lights”)
The film is produced by New Line Cinema and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Steven Quale is directing the film from a screenplay by John Swetnam.
Rumors have circulated that the movie is a part of the popular "Twister" movie series; Sandler said those rumors are not true.
The movie will on location at Oakview through Thursday. The entire movie will be shot in Michigan over the next several weeks.
There's no public access to the set, though Lake George Road has been busy with curious onlookers driving slowly by. Sandler said anyone who would like to try to be an extra can send their name, phone number and photo to UTP@realstyleonline.com.

Looks like Richard may well have to dodge between films. I'm guessing that as many film scenes aren't shot in sequence then he may well join the Category Six cast a little later on and film in one block, this will then give him chance to finish any filming on TH. Busy, busy, busy!!!!
I wonder how long Category Six (or whatever it's going to be called)will actually take to film? Doesn't sound exactly a deep and meaningful role to get his teeth into does it? But then I find most disaster movies like this a little dull and usually have very little storyline apart from the obligatory action scenes. I hope those tornadoes blow all of Richard's clothes off, or at least give us a few shirtless scenes please directors!(Well it's been a long drought and we've got to make up for lost time haven't we girls!!!)
Lol, haha;D "very little storyline"..."hope those tornadoes blow Richard's clothes off or at least a few shirtless scenes". teehee I'm really partial to your storyline, Sue.
There are over 200 student extras participating in the tornado film. A few of them are starting to comment on twitter & FB. Yesterday one 13y/o girl described slipping on a wet leaf as cast ran away from tornado & she found herself smacking right into Richard. He held her arm to prevent her from falling into water. *sigh..they should include that shot in final cut:)
Another extra told an RA fan that he is clean shaven for the new movie. Someone needs to take a few photos of the star of cat6 or should title be "Gone With the Wind--A Shirtless Fantasy";)
RiCrAr,
I'm just wondering if it is the teens (or youngsters) that may be the stars of this new film? Maybe Richard's part won't be all that big (far from true I'm sure, tee, hee, couldn't resist that one!)
So does Richard need to go back and film more of TH, using a falsie (beard that is)or is he done, except for a a bit of voiceover on the film?
When is that man coming home!!!
Sue, Richard is listed as the star of the natural disaster film. Judging from what I've read so far, yes the teens dilemma after the storm will be his character's primary focus. Apparently he'll join stormchasers, including a female, as they search for his son and his friends.
After reading the outline of the plot, it reminded me of another movie RA almost committed to - 'Charlie' - as I recall his prospective role would've been a WWII Brit soldier who protects a group of orphaned Italian children, including some teens. The similarity in the plots struck me as telling of where Richard's interests lie beyond the Thorin role.
As for his beard..he seems to be a speedy facial hair grower;D It would only be a matter of weeks before Thorin's beard was in full bloom, so to speak, once again.
Didn't Sir Ian say at CC that they would return to NZ in 2013 for additional filming on the third film in that series?
Enjoy your weekend - Don't do anything I wouldn't do;)--which gives you plenty of flexibility for having a great time. haha
