Thorin, Bilbo and Gandalf quotes:
Thorin: May the hair on his toes never fall off!

[as Bilbo and the dwarves are getting ready for the Battle of Three - ultimately Five - Armies, "Mister Baggins" complains about his ill-fitting war-gear]
Bilbo Baggins: This is deucedly uncomfortable. I'm certain to get a rash!
Thorin: That armor was forged in the foundaries of my grandfather. Wear it proudly, and it will carry you to victory!
Bilbo Baggins: BOTHER victory! I hope only to be taken prisoner as quickly as possible!
Thorin: Those are the words of a COWARD!
Bilbo Baggins: The coward who flushed out Smaug? The coward who saved you time and time again? The coward who always went forward while you cringed behind?
Thorin: You don't see us cringing NOW, do you?
Bilbo Baggins: This is MADNESS! Fourteen against ten thousand, and yet you march off to certain destruction as merrily as if you were on your way to another tea party!
Thorin: Your kind will never understand war, hobbit. This is WAR!

Gandalf the Grey: This is a map of Lonely Mountain, given to me by your grandfather.
Thorin: What? Why wasn't it given to me, the rightful heir?
Gandalf the Grey: I have chosen my time to give it to you.
Bilbo Baggins: Oh, I do love maps! I have quite a collection of them.
Thorin: Bah! I remember the mountain well enough without this.

If LOOKS COULD KILL, the orcs and goblins will be dead once Thorin's steely gaze fastens on them
His powerful sword is 'Orcrist'...

That penetrating stare is a strong reminder of...

Thorin

July 17th, 2011 - Following copied from TheOneRing.net website...
For a week or so, we have been treated to an unprecedented look at the Dwarves from Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit. Today, TheOneRing.net is both honored and humbled to be given the worldwide exclusive reveal of Thorin Oakenshield! (and Orcrist, the Goblin-cleaver!)

From TheOneRing.Net, here’s what they say about Thorin: “As a young Dwarf prince, Thorin witnessed the destruction and terror wrought when a great fire-breathing Dragon attacked the Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor. After slaughtering many of Thorin’s kin, the great serpent, Smaug, entered The Lonely Mountain and took possession of its vast store of gold and jewels. No-one came to the aid of the surviving Dwarves, and thus, a once proud and noble race was forced into exile. Through long years of hardship, Thorin grew to be a strong and fearless fighter and revered leader. In his heart a fierce desire grew; a desire to reclaim his homeland and destroy the beast that had brought such misery upon his people. So when fate offers him an unusual ally, he seizes the chance for revenge.

TheOneRing website provided a wallpaper of Thorin and Company…

More of my thoughts on newly released Thorin pic:
Are you happy with PJ‘s Thorin look? Tolkien describes Thorin as a commanding figure…a noble presence. The look above pretty much sums that up for me. I have a mental image of RA as the dwarf leader - he’s growling, shouting orders, providing swashbuckling action during swordplay scenes,

I think Jackson was going with the Guy3 look except with the required dwarf beard and much thicker, longer hair…can’t believe how much I like his flowing mane…surprising myself

IMO, Jackson will have many close ups of Thorin’s eyes and it will have an even more stunning effect than when he zeroed in on Aragorn's eyes (also Frodo's huge blue eyes). RA's deep blue pools can compete anyday with the aforementioned. Especially when he adopts the Guy stare, like in the newly released Thorin image.

Thorin’s bling..a silver ring on each hand - it’s ironic that he’s wearing a ring on each hand because Laura suggested yesterday that she thought she could see a mark on one of his fingers…as though his hand was suntanned but a lighter band indicated he might be wearing a ring.  She really might’ve noticed something on the Project pix.

Sue says Thorin in the newly released pic looks fierce.  Agreed, and isn't that how Tolkien described him AND doesn't it remind you of someone else who was often fierce?

Beg to differ with those comparing Thorin's look to a klingon...*not even close* :)

I'm totally in awe with Thorin, Richard looks absolutely amazing!

I remember the photoshopped Viggo poster, it's not that different, really :)

I agree, BeG, PJ's Thorin has thicker, longer hair and of course the required dwarf beard, and his penetrating eyes should have the same stun-gun effect :) they've always had.

Once we see him in action..with that commanding Guy-like strut, graceful movements and deep, authoritative voice as the dwarf leader, the usualy drooling will commence;)

It's no small wonder why his hair was cropped so short, is it? Must be very warm under all that hair, but it's far better than the buzz cut. *chuckles*

He's wearing some serious bling on his fingers, isn't he. Didn't Tolkien describe Thorin as rather avarice of wealth, and anxious to regain the jewels and fortune the dragon had stolen from his family?

I also noticed the bling and LOVE THEM!!!
I'm guessing the rings have some meaning for Thorin, he wouldn't wear them otherwise...

Oh, and I really, really like the buzz cut :D

But... Thorin's hair is just swoonworthy, specially with all the grey.

I'm also glad the beard is quite short. And his eyes are just piercing. I'm sure PJ will make them shine through all that black, as he has before with Viggo and Elijah (as you have already mentioned).

These have been an exciting few days, since last thursday my heart has nearly stopped for a few times.

I'm not really sure how I'm going to make it when I finally watch The Hobbit. In 3D! GAWD!!!

BeG, the original pic was too small and dark. Someone on twitter enlarged it and then when lightened a wee bit, you can see that Thorin has beautiful blue eyes.

My very first reaction the moment I first saw PJ's Thorin pic, said to myself "oooh, look at that flowing mane of handsome dark hair.

Yes, you're right about his rings..perhaps that belonged to his father/gf. The previsous generations that had been forced to leave their fortune and hearth when Smaug movied in. Will need to check the book to see if there's a reference to them. Now we'll all want large silver rings...a few fans might wear them elsewhere than their fingers:)

As I recall, doesn't Thorin's golden moment occur after the dwarves arrive in Laketown - after the rapids barrel ride? The townfolk treat him as their long-lost king who will one day soon reclaim their homeland from the pesky dragon. We know Richard will handle Thorin's speech with aplomb. Can't wait to see it! *wibble, wobble*

Oooohh, Thorin is awesome! I love the Guyliner! I can hardly wait to see him in TH. He looks so fierce and commanding..makes me all weak inside!

I agree it's exactly the right look for Thorin (although I must admit seeing Richard like that was a bit of a shock, hardly recognised him!)

No wonder he had to have his hair cropped so short, so that the wig can be set quite high back on his forehead, which gives him a menacing look. It must take hours for him to be made up first thing in the morning. They have aged him wonderfully, deepening those crinkles, giving him bushy eyebrows and finally adding the wig. He does look in his fifties, no doubt about that with the grey added to his beard and hair. It must be strange to look into the mirror and see yourself like that. Weird!!!

I'm just curious about what kind of voice he will have now. Will it be soft but menacing or a great roar of a lion? I think this film is going to be fabulous! Can't wait to see it.

Ricrar, Glad you posted the Worf Klingon pic with Thorin. The Thorin pic also brought to mind a Klingon to me yesterday, but seeing them side by side I can see how treacherous memory can be.

I do think Thorin's look, the long hair, etc. was also used for several characters in LOTR. Lots of men with big hair in Return of the King!

I can't wait to see him fighting with Orcrist!

I can actually see the Klingon/Dwarf resemblance... the fierce gaze, the flowing hair, the heavy uniform. That's where I draw the line, though.

I can't wait to see this in "real life", as opposed to pics that can be so easily altered. Bet those blue eyes will be fiercer than ever.

Don't like the short-short hair, though. I get why it's necessary, but I miss the bit longer cuts.

Agreed re longer hair being more attractive on Richard. Perfectly understand why he needed to keep it cropped as close as possible for Thorin's mane.

We shall see if the length is more to our liking tonight at the CA premiere.
