For those who have the Hallmark Channel, this is a lovely Christmas romance involving a confirmed bachelor and a single female veterinary student. Uplifting drama, with a hunky fireman, who's adopted by a clever feline that teaches him how to overcome commitment phobia. It will get you in the holiday spirit..

Carrefour Savoirs (English Translation)
Looking at the photo you would probably say that this face is known to you without being
able to place it. You will be enlightened. By Arnaud Bordas.
When an actor is bordering on 1m 90 and shows a face with regular features and gray-blue
eyes that could bring down a group of women, what can he do to get noticed?
Where others would have chosen the easy way out and have tied themselves to posh roles
in romantic comedies, the Englishman Richard Armitage, who came from British television,
has preferred to interpret a bearded dwarf with long hair in The Hobbit, the new trilogy by
Peter Jackson, inspired by the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Well done: the role of the charismatic
Thorin Oakenshield, the actor disguised by the talented makeup artists and shrunken
through the magic of digital effects, has made his mark in the minds of audiences around
the world just as Viggo Mortensen had with his interpretation of Aragorn in The Lord of the
Rings ten years ago. The two characters have a lot in common besides their status as heir to
the throne, which Thorin must regain accompanied by the Hobbit Bilbo, Gandalf the Grey
Wizard and his twelve fellow dwarves, embarking on a journey that will take him to Moria,
(author’s mistake – should be Erebor) the kingdom of his people when they were driven out
by the terrifying dragon Smaug. We remember the start of An Unexpected Journey - the first
part of The Hobbit, released in cinemas last year - in which Thorin heroically faced his
nemesis, the white orc Azog.
This year he is expected to shine in the second chapter The Desolation of Smaug, where his
role will gradually become more complex and end in climax during the gigantic Battle of Five
Armies that ends the last chapter. After that, the name Richard Armitage should certainly be
one of the influential members of the kingdom of Hollywood.

That's right - there is that music in DoS called the soundtrack - we'll squeeze it in even though the composer doesn't have a sleeve of tatts;)  Watch for glimpses of Thorin at end, including one where he...wait for it...smiles! WooHoo!  Beautiful music -- as you listen, you might want to climb unto your sofa and take off your shoes & socks -- PJ style.
Sincere thanks to Annette at http://richardarmitageonline.com/ for hosting Richard's thoughtful messages to his fans:
Message from Richard Armitage, 19th December 2013
Hi everyone,
Well I just wanted to come on line and wish everyone a Happy Christmas (Turkey Day or Holiday, depending on your preference) it's been another wonderful year, which has been full of hard work, fun and surprises. Thank you for your continuing support of my work, I hope you never underestimate what that means to me personally. Seeing so many at the LA premier (sorry about the un fan-friendly red carpet) Berlin, London, Madrid is really the highlight of the year. I am very proud to have such a dedicated community of 'well wishers' (better word than fans...right?) Proud because of the dignity and decency with which you communicate with each other and document your ideas. It's always illuminated with positivity and support for each other, unlikely friendships forged through a common interest. That makes me proud, and brings me to my real reason for the message. To say a huge thank you to Annette Gill, who has worked so hard on her web pages, doing exactly what I just described in a very elegant way. I think she is truly a wonderful journalist and archivist and I would like to thank her personally for all the time she spent creating and updating the site.
I wanted to wish you love and happiness for 2014, thank you for the generous gifts and the donations to the 'Just Giving' pages I think our totals are looking very healthy.
Without getting into a pulpit or onto soap box, (cynics tune out now!) I want to say that for me especially as I get older, this time of year becomes more about making the journey to be with family or friends and sitting around a table which hopefully has some good food on it, however bountiful that is. But for those who don't have very much or are alone, I wish them at least a sense of peace for a day. I know that I am happiest when I can be useful, which usually involves giving time and effort towards something. That gives me peace. (Guess who's making the gravy this year!!)
This quote isn't meant to be maudlin, because I actually find it uplifting, but it expresses what I mean. It's Sonya from Chekhov's Uncle Vanya.

What can we do? We must live out our lives....we shall live, Uncle Vanya. We shall live all through the endless procession of days ahead of us, and through the long evenings. We shall bear patiently the burdens that fate imposes on us. We shall work without rest for others, both now and when we are old. And when our final hour comes, we shall meet it humbly.... we shall enter on a bright and beautiful life. We shall rejoice... A tender smile -- and -- we shall rest. We shall hear the angels. We shall see heaven shining like a jewel. We shall see evil and all our pain disappear in the great pity that shall enfold the world. Our life will be as peaceful and gentle and sweet as a caress. I have faith...we shall rest.

Merry Christmas! + Richard Armitage Showreels by elvirasweeney + Tribute to JT + Guy Artistry + James Bond Poll(w/current results) + New Pix + RA on Ice(Olympic flashback) + Jonny Moseley's 5th Week

Showreels I & II by elvirasweeney

North & South: Tribute to John Thornton by gsbohn..
Dezz at Hollywood Spy has done it - 'it' refers to his latest poll, which asks who should be the next James Bond.  Need he ask? really? Look at the photo above or below and remind yourself of the deep dulcet tones of Richard's voice - not to mention the way his other attributes fill out Bond-like suits. The last reason of course should have been mentioned first - his superb acting ability (apparently felt that goes without saying but must remember to say anyway)  There are at least a half doz listed in the poll including one of my fav American actors - Jeffrey Donovan, star of Burn Notice.  Really felt a bit sad about voting for RA and not Jeffrey (the latter might even be a long lost cousin:) Donovan is one of our Co Cork family surnames) although, in truth - despite the fact he's a powerful actor, Jeffrey's speaking voice lacks the same surround-sound timbre of Richard's.
Anyway, RA fans - get ye to Dezz's site asap to vote in his new Bond poll..scroll..
Peeked at latest results - the vote count has doubled since yesterday and the results make it clear which fans live by the motto "vote early and often" :)...not really, because Dezz takes the opposite approach - one vote per 'puter...Jason Statham 0 (0%)  Gerard Butler 19 (16%)  Rupert P.Jones 9 (7%)
Julian McMahon 3 (2%)  Richard Armitage 73 (63%)  Jeffrey Donovan 3 (2%)  Colin Farrell 3 (2%)Clive Owen 5 (4%)LATEST:Richard Armitage 110 (63%) - 12/27:Richard Armitage 189 (64%)

Artists impressions of GRR Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire saga.  About half way through, you'll see the red priestess and with her (holding sword over head..later on a white horse) is the rightful King of Westeros - Stannis Baratheon.  She convinces him that she can help retrieve his throne.  He's Lord of Dragonstone -  Stannis is the role Musa and I feel would be perfect for RA.  He's described as partially bald, but does wear his crown a great deal, and as we know from past experience - even totally bald would evidently not be a problem for Richard.  Reaction: Us :(  Him :)

Just read the political opinions of someone who apparently lacks the enlightened insight I was ready to believe he espoused.  Won't enjoy reading his work nearly as much now that I realize the sum of all his parts doesn't add up to anywhere near what I'd hoped.

An excerpt from a poem he used while airing frustrations with the current political landscape..

>The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity.< (from a poem by Yeats)

The person's interpretation of the above Yeats line is exactly opposite from the reality of the situation.  Which is,  that the best have finally risen to the crucial occasion and applied their noble convictions to the sticking stone, while the worst have lost their once passionate intensity due to their extremely faulty and thereby unworkable political philosophy and beliefs.  It's really difficult to enjoy the writings of someone for whom you've lost respect, because they've proven themselves to be simply another boring, indoctrinated liberal robot.  Fortunately, for every writer who once promised depth and wisdom there is always another holding high the torch of independent thinking with integrity and truth.

UPDATE: Filed under life can be weirder than fiction:

About 6mos ago I'd sent a private message to writer Geo Martin(A Game of Thrones,Vol 1 of A Song of Ice and Fire series of books) at his journal - a short time ago received a notice saying he'd replied to it.  The above comment of mine was in reference to a recent political post by him at his journal.  Is this too much coincidence or what?:)  Well, anyway, took the opportunity to reply to grrm's response to say RA would be perfect for the King Stannis Baratheon role in Season 2 of the HBO special Game of Thrones.  Many players have been cast for this upcoming HBO special after they'd been suggested by GoT readers.

Following is Mr Martin's reply to my post from 6mos ago...might reconsider finishing his series afterall -- everything is relative:) Of course, The Hobbit news was revealed in the meantime, so who knows if RA would even have the available time in his schedule at this point.

Today's reply from GRR Martin
>Re: A New 'Game of Thrones' Reader's Fan Suggestion
from grrm:
Thanks for the message, and your recommendation of Richard Armitage for a role in GAME OF THRONES. We are using mostly British and Irish actors in the series, so I will keep Armitage in mind for the second season (assuming we're lucky enough to get one). <

My original message to him:

> Hello grrm, I'm not sure if you received a comment I posted to your journal a short time ago, so thought I'd send this private message to be certain you receive it. I've just started your 1st book of the series 'Game of Thrones' and find it very exciting and vividly imaginative. A person I've found to be an excellent actor came to mind as a possibility for one of the roles in the rich setting you've created. He's British actor, Richard Armitage. (not our famous politician of the same name:) Richard is currently the star of the BBC's long-running series 'Spooks'. He has also recently starred on Sky1 in Chris Ryan's 'Strike Back' as John Porter, SAS. (Armitage is 38yrs old) One of his most famous roles was as Sir Guy of Gisborne in the BBC's three seasons of Robin Hood.

Following are examples of his work: BBC Robin Hood Series 2, Ep 13 (Guy of Gisborne slays the love of his life, Marian)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpR7ITS8gM4&feature=related

Armitage is also a busy narrator - his narration of Bernard Cornwell’s 'Lords of the North' is absolutely splendid (at least 12 different voices..including the females--he performs the narration rather than merely reading it) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p9QCr12ypto

This one is from Robin Hood.

The actor's breakthrough role in 1994 was as John Thornton in Elizabeth Gaskell's novel 'North and South'.

Thanks for your time and best of luck with your new HBO series - can't wait for 2011 =)

See Video Game + See Amazing Similarity to John Proctor

Fanvid North and South classic:
North and South, excerpt Chapter X:
(Margaret compares her father's appearance with Mr Thornton's)
Her father was of slight figure, which made him appear taller than he really was, when not

contrasted, as at this time, with the tall, massive frame of

another. The lines in her father's face were soft and waving,

with a frequent undulating kind of trembling movement passing

over them, showing every fluctuating emotion; the eyelids were

large and arched, giving to the eyes a peculiar languid beauty

which was almost feminine. The brows were finely arched, but

were, by the very size of the dreamy lids, raised to a

considerable distance from the eyes. Now, in Mr. Thornton's face

the straight brows fell low over the clear, deep-set earnest

eyes, which, without being unpleasantly sharp, seemed intent

enough to penetrate into the very heart and core of what he was

looking at. The lines in the face were few but firm, as if they

were carved in marble, and lay principally about the lips, which

were slightly compressed over a set of teeth so faultless and

beautiful as to give the effect of sudden sunlight when the rare

bright smile, coming in an instant and shining out of the eyes,

changed the whole look from the severe and resolved expression of

a man ready to do and dare everything, to the keen honest

enjoyment of the moment, which is seldom shown so fearlessly and

instantaneously except by children. Margaret liked this smile; it

was the first thing she had admired in this new friend of her

father's; and the opposition of character, shown in all these

details of appearance she had just been noticing, seemed to

explain the attraction they evidently felt towards each other.
Ali at www.richardarmitagenet.com has graciously compiled all RA's messages over the years. http://www.richardarmitagenet.com/ramessages.html
In August, after a The Crucible performance, RA fans noticed a tweet saying "have found your Joel" They have since learned he's the principal character in a Playstation game which is currently being adapted to a movie.  There is an amazing likeness to the Proctor look and it would be an action role. Well Wishers have also noted RA started to follow (on twitter) the creator of the game.
There's also a striking physical resemblance to Strike Back's John Porter after heavier stubble growth...
For those curious about the plot of the Playstation game - it's terrifying and a tad too close to the world's current Ebola fears..

Cate Blanchett Joins The Hobbit + Richard Armitage Pix + bccmee's Clever "Harry Holidays" for RA Fans

Shhhhhh,,,don't want to disturb him:)  He might be dreaming of what he wants for Christmas..one of these years..

We know RA can dance, but didn't really realize what a huge understatement that is until seeing this  http://elfyourself.jibjab.com/view/iYKlIZFuMtZVVCHd

Here's another Hobbit gift idea - it's a woolen scarf from NZ - perhaps they'd customize it or the ubiquitous tshirt for us..we could wear the latter as an everyday nightie as opposed to special occasions*wink* :)

Cate Blanchett (“Lord of The Rings” trilogy, “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”) will reprise her role from “Lord of The Rings” trilogy as Galadriel, the Lady of Lothlorien. Ken Stott (“Charlie Wilson’s War”, TV’s “Rebus”) will play the Dwarf Lord Balin, Sylvester McCoy (TV’s “Doctor Who”) will play the wizard Radagast the Brown and well-known Swedish actor, Mikael Persbrandt (“Everlasting Moments”, “Day and Night”) will play the shape-shifter Beorn. British actor Ryan Gage (“Outlaw”, TV’s “Doctors”) will play Drogo Baggins, with New Zealand actors Jed Brophy (“Lord of The Rings” trilogy, “District 9”) playing the role of the dwarf Nori, and William Kircher (“Out of the Blue”; TV’s “Legend of the Seeker”) rounding out the company of Thorin Oakensheild in role of the dwarf Bifur.
[Ricrar trivia: can't believe how many times since The Hobbit/RA announcement that I've seen Thorin's last name misspelled as above.  Simple spelling rule comes to mind "i before e except after c." :)  Class dismissed for the day;) hehe

Peter Jackson welcomed the news of Cate Blanchett’s return to Middle-earth “Cate is one of my favorite actors to work with and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have her reprise the role she so beautifully brought to life in the earlier films”

http://www.theonering.net/torwp/2010/12/07/41135-torn-exclusive-cate-blanchett-ken-stott-sylvester-mccoy-mikael-persbrandt-join-cast-of-peter-jackson%E2%80%99s-%E2%80%9Cthe-hobbit%E2%80%9D/

Cate is reprising her role of Galadriel, the Lady of Lothlorien - found the first rendition of Tolkien's character and then Ms Blanchett in Lord of the Rings.  Is it just me, or does Geraldine O'Reilly have a strong resemblance to Cate?

So sweet and lovely for the holiday season -- Know for a fact that Harry was her RA first:)

                                                                                   ****

Can you detect a definite pattern that's developed with recent RA characters? Last sentence below.."at the end of the novel, Thorin remains an almost tragic figure."  We could insert Guy..Lucas or even John Mulligan and rightfully add "almost tragic figure."  Which no doubt will again make the actor happy:)
Was the last truly happy ending for John Thornton?

>Thorin Oakenshield:    Though he makes his appearance at the start of the novel and is part of the adventure throughout, Thorin is never fully developed. For much of the book, he seems to be just one of the dwarves, even though he is their leader. In moments of danger, however, Thorin always comes to the forefront and does his part. Unfortunately, Thorin, more than any other dwarf, becomes obsessed with the treasure, especially the Arkenstone, and his greed clouds his basic goodness.

Initially, Tolkien portrays Thorin as pompous leader, very conscious of his own dignity and what is due to him as chief of the dwarves. He is also portrayed as courageous and loyal to his companions. He does not hesitate to act when the trolls and goblins attack and tries his best to rescue his companions, despite overwhelming odds. He also behaves with fairness and scrupulous attention to detail when he takes Bilbo on as the official burglar for the expedition, promising him an equal share of the profits. As the hobbit becomes increasingly heroic, Thorin begins conceding some of the leadership of the group to Bilbo, eventually accepting his leadership and his plans without resentment or undue pride.

When the treasure is within grasp, Thorin changes dramatically to the worse. Gripped by greed, he becomes autocratic and uncaring, rejecting the legitimate claims of Bard and the people of Lake- town to part of the treasure and ungratefully throwing Bilbo out after his attempt to secure peace. When he does agree to give up a part of the treasure, the effect of gold-lust on him is so strong that he forgets his own lineage, code of conduct, and pride, breaking his word.

Thorin at last comes back to his senses, bravely fighting

in the Battle of Five Armies and making amends with Bilbo. However, at the end of the novel, Thorin remains an almost tragic figure.
