"led by legendary warrior Thorin Oakenshield" +Opening Ceremony Details + Speculation on Day 1 Shooting Locations + Rob (Appleby) Kazinsky's Profile + Warner Bros Publishes Photo of Director Jackson + Preparations for Day 1: THE HOBBIT Blog + Official FB Page with Correct Cast Listing;)

The company of 13 dwarves, Baggins and the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen) have been in Wellington for the last two months preparing for the films.

"The Hobbit," to be made as two 3D films, follows the journey of Baggins, who is swept into an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor, which was conquered by the dragon Smaug. Approached out of the blue by the wizard Gandalf the Grey, Bilbo finds himself joining a company of 13 dwarves led by the legendary warrior Thorin Oakensheild.

Their journey will take them into the Wild; through treacherous lands swarming with Goblins and Orcs, deadly Wargs and Giant Spiders, Shapeshifters and Sorcerers and ultimately Baggins' meeting with Gollum, where he gains possession of Gollum's "precious" ring -- the simple, gold ring that is tied to the fate of all Middle-Earth.

Joining Baggins on the quest are the Dwarves, played by Richard Armitage (Thorin Oakenshield), Ken Stott (Balin), Graham McTavish (Dwalin), William Kircher (Bifur), James Nesbitt (Bofur), Stephen Hunter (Bombur), Rob Kazinsky (Fili), Aidan Turner (Kili), Peter Hambleton (Gloin), John Callen (Oin), Jed Brophy (Nori), Mark Hadlow (Dori) and Adam Brown (Ori).

EXCERPT(see link below):  The king under the mountain blogger wondered if he'd ever actually type the words  — The Hobbit is under way.  He went on to say:

"According to rumours, today’s filming is happening at two locations — Wellington’s Stone Street Studios and the Hobbiton site in the Waikato town of Matamata."

He then added:  "the day is scheduled to begin with a Powhiri — a Maori welcoming ceremony involving speeches, dancing, singing and finally the hongi — the pressing one’s nose to another person to exchange the breath of life. It will be a beautiful moment for the cast and crew, long remembered."

Day One of THE HOBBIT blog:  http://www.thehobbitblog.com/

This was the only photo Warner Bros published today when they announced that Sir Peter Jackson is in good health and ready to start filming THE HOBBIT.  It's a brand new hobbit hole in a secret location - not the one used for LOTR.  Looks so cozy..wonder if Bilbo's about offering guests mugs of ale;)
UPDATE:Found some NZ recipes for all sorts of scones and cupcakes...yummy.  Bilbo put the kettle on;)

UPDATE: Second pic added and this one is even more inviting - small wonder why the dwarves couldn't resist a surprise visit to Bilbo's hobbit hole;)

Past post of the day from Nov 2010--Men in Leather article ruffles some feathers;) and speculation about Thorin as Sir Guy's mini-me??

This cute video received positive feedback on twitter...mostly chuckles..

Can't imagine why director Peter Jackson said he wants RA to demonstrate his acting range and his talented technology staff will take care of transforming the 6'2" actor into Thorin the dwarf.  Acting range...really? *winks at all you knowing fans*

Yes, finally, first day of filming is here :)

Hope we get some reports from Middle Earth, especially about a particular dwarf.

Security seems extra tight today, Musa BUT kiwis have noticed the huge interest in 13 determined dwarves & one uneasy hobbit. Suspect we'll get spontaneous hobbit tweets from surprised locals as they go about their daily lives.

I'm about to post the only photo published with the film studio's announcement that Sir Peter is in good health and about to call for lights, camera, action.

He's exiting a new hobbit hole in a secret location. Not the one used for LOTR.

A second photo of Sir Peter in Bilbo's cozy hobbit hole was added at FB. It's even more inviting than the first. Some months back I'd stumbled upon a fantastically detailed model of Hobbiton including the interior of the hobbit's charming home. Must try to again locate it.

I hope we will get some brief clips of filming as we did with Captain America?

I wonder at what point in the story of The Hobbit they intend to end part one and begin part two? Any ideas? My guess is that it might be when they are trapped in the tunnel by the dragon in the mountain. I can't honestly think where else it would make a reasonable ending to a film, without making it essential to watch part two. (Unless of course that's the whole idea) Surely making one complete film would have been better - and cheaper? (Even if that meant cutting out some details of the story).

Sue, IMO the decision was made to make two TH films in order to capitalize on it's potential profit for the film industry. They've had little success in recent years with their huge investments. The LOTR was one of the last blockbuster franchises for them -- therefore their strategy could be to use the break between hobbit movies as a cliffhanger.

The dwarves ultimate goal is to recapture their gold - Warner Bros does as well.

The latest edition of Entertainment Wkly devoted an entire article to the fact most TV series today deliberately plan a final ep cliffhanger in order to keep the audience hungry for more and clamoring for another season.
